Great Barrington town voters, on May 1, authorized a Community Preservation Act grant in the amount of $58,000 for the design and development of a new walking trail between Bridge Street and Brookside Road. GBLC is honored to have the support of the CPA Committee and town residents for the development of this new trail. The grant, which will be available in FY18, will help GBLC cover the cost of professional trail design, land surveying, permit applications, and construction budgeting. GBLC estimates the total cost of this work at $75,000.

You are quite likely to discover this early butterfly: Mourning Cloak. Unlike most other butterfly species that winter in the larva stage, the adults of this species enter hollow trees and woodpiles to hibernate through the winter. How does the early butterfly survive with scarce if any nectar sources?

This past summer, all new bog bridges and boardwalks were installed at the Pfeiffer Arboretum, using black locust timber harvested from the Lake Mansfield Conservation Forest and donated by the Town of Great Barrington. This project involved 14 teens from Greenagers, 3 crew leaders and one director. Volunteers contributed 119 hours of work.

River Walk added a March for Science to its annual Earth Day volunteer workday this year and over 200 families, community members and visitors came from near and far came to make signs, talk about how important science is to them, and march in its defense.
